Perhaps most exciting of these concepts are the complete homebrew character classes, providing players with entirely new game experiences if their Dungeon Masters approve them. While many of these creations can be comically unbalanced, there are communities dedicated to creating high-quality, playtested 5e content that is nearly identical to something Wizards of the Coast would publish. Especially if you can grab Armor of Agathys via race or a warlock dip (Mark of Warding dwarves get it) which will stack with your arcane ward (AND your ward is depleted first), which will drastically extend how long Agathys lasts and how much damage you do with it (by getting hit). There've also been some hefty abjuration wizard builds (sometimes multiclassed with EK) that also stand up pretty well. Any cleric with heavy armor would also work, but with varying degrees of ability to draw attention from others in combat. So they are also very good tanks, better than most paladin builds, imo. Battlesmith artificer, meanwhile, has the Shield spell, the ability to magically augment their armor, smites that can hurt or heal, loads of healing spells, and a battle-buddy that can impose disadvantage. Cavalier fighter is great at that, as is just about anyone with PAM and Sentinel.
